How to get Windows to copy data onto DVD

Hi guys. I've an Acer laptop (with CD/DVD burner) and Windows XP Home.

Using My Computer (and Copy and Paste) I copied some large data files to
my E: drive (the computer's CD/DVD drawer) - or anyway to the area where
Windows puts files waiting to be burnt to a CD or DVD.

But Windows wouldn't recognise the blank DVD+RW disc waiting in my E:
drive. So, reluctantly, I replaced the blank DVD (4.7 GB) with a blank
CD (700 MB). Now the CD Writer Wizard was happy (at least, after I used
Nero to 'erase' the already blank disc, but that's another matter).

Unfortunately, the several files were almost certainly too large to fit
on one CD. (Realising this, I stopped the burning process before
completion.) I would have much preferred to put them on a DVD.

Please, how does one get Windows to recognise a blank DVD and then burn
to it?

Thanks - Ken

You have to use 3rd party software.

Windows XP's CD Writing Wizard will not burn DVDs.

Use Nero, since you seem to have it, unless it's an old version like 5.0
that doesn't burn DVDs either.

Thanks Wes. Yes I have a version 6.x of Nero.

Unfortunately, I'm currently unable to get a burn done. Or at least ...
read on As a test, I had ONE file that I wanted to put on DVD. It was
small and it was in My Computer waiting to be burned on the E: drive
(the CD/DVD drawer). Instead of clicking on 'Write these files to CD
now' (that's the approximate wording of the Windows message on the left
of screen), I right-clicked and chose from a list the entry 'Copy to
DVD' (I think that's the name of a program, actually.) The burning
happened. But then, when I went to open the newly-burned DVD, I found
myself back where I had started: the same screen as before with a list
of 'Files Currently on the CD' (yes, 'CD' - what's wrong with Windows
that it can't recognise a DVD right under its nose, in the computer's
CD/DVD drawer?!). And there was the message on the left of screen
saying as before, 'Write these files to CD now'.

[The above is as best as I can recall the situation from this afternoon.
I deleted the ONE file, thinking to give up. After all, I've got
other computer problems happening at the moment - for just one of them,
see a separate thread here!)

Thanks, guys - Ken

Ken,

Open Nero Burning ROM or whatever it's called with ver 6 and use their
burning wizard to burn your DVDs. Read Nero English Quickstart or Nero Help
file if necessary. You'd be amazed at how much info is in Help files.
