How to force CHKDSK to run at boot time

Using Diskeeper, I tried to run a boot-time defrag along with chkdsk. The
defrag failed (another issue for another time), and chkdsk did not run
either. Now whenever I try to do a regular defrag with Diskeeper, it won't
run because it says that chkdsk is scheduled to run at next boot. But, I've
rebooted numbers of times and chkdsk does not run.

Is there a way I can force chkdsk to run on booting?

OK, I figured out how to make chkdsk run at boot up, but now when it starts I
get the msg "Cannot open volume for direct access", and it quits. Does anyone
have any idea what is causing this? And how to fix it.

When I run the command "fsutil dirty query c:", it responds that it is
dirty. Can anyone point me to the place in the registry where "dirty" is set.
If I can reset it to "not dirty" (I don't really need to run chkdsk), then my
Diskeeper will start to run properly again.

(I tried looking for help at the Diskeeper sight, but the only tech help
they have is an FAQ page ... some help!)

so you did from administrator's cmd prompt:
chkdsk /f c:
or whatever drive?
and you also tried booting into safe mode?

Are you trying to do this on an external drive by any chance? If so it wont
work.
You say C: so I'm assuming not. Start/Run enter cmd hit enter and then type
chkdsk C: /r enter then enter Y when asked to do it at boot time.
There is no way C: could be in use at boot time unless you have something
else attached like a flash drive or something in the optical drives/floopy
or...??
You can't "undirty' a volume without doing the disk check.
However you might be lucky if you have a hard drive from a manufacturer that
also happens to have a disk maintenance utility on their website.
For instance Western Digital's WD Diagnostics, which you can set to chkdsk
the whole drive and correct any errors while booted up.
