Hi,

How can I enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP when using a PPTP connection ?

NOTE:
-all windows 2000 clients behind firewall can form vpn connection to remote
server but CANT ping any nodes
-all windows XP clinets behind firewall can form vpn connection to remote
server and CAN ping nodes
-windows 2000 clinet on stand alone dialup can form vpn and CAN ping
-have tried with use default gateway on remote network checked and unchecked
-windows XP has ENABLE NETBIOS checked.

Any ideas anyone ? im flumixed !

Thanks
Scott

Its so annoying as when i run IPCONFIG /ALL the ppp adapter shows:

IP 192.168.1.60
SubNet 255.255.255.255
Gateway 192.168.1.60
DNS 192.168.1.7
DNS 192.168.1.3
WINS 192.168.1.2

So its obviously picking up network addresses perfectly.

Is there any fundamental difference with XP PRO and WIN 2K in the way the
use PPTP ? i.e it could be my firewall blocking something that 2k requires
that XP pro does not need ?

Ether this or netbios prob.

Cheers
Scott.

Ping is a tcp/ip utility. It has nothing to do with Netbios.

If you cannot ping by IP address you have a IP routing problem. If you
can ping by address but cannot ping by name you have a DNS problem.

I see,

But why would it work from all XP pro clinets from behind a firewall and
windows 2000 clinets on front on a firewall. Yet ALL windows 2000 clinets
behind the firewall wont work.

The IP settings in IPCONFIG look spot on, they are the same as the XP
machines. That would lead me to believe the firewall is stopping something
or being that I cant seem to enable NETBIOS on 2000 pro machines it could be
related to that.

Thanks for the response.
Scott.

Netbios over TCP/IP is not really a very good choice for a WAN or for
VPN clients. Routers block LAN broadcasts, so you need WINS to use Netbios
names across routers. VPN connections do not carry LAN broadcasts either, so
you again have problems with. It can be tricky to get it working.

How do you know that Nertbios is the problem? W2k/XP will try to use
both DNS and Netbios to resolve names, and will use whatever resolves first.
I find DNS mucher faster and more reliable across a VPN link.
