How to decline but keep in calendar

I often get invited to meetings that I would like to attend, but that I
have to decline because some other meeting is already planned. As soon as I
decline, the meeting is removed from my calendar. Often I would like it to
stay in my calendar as 'tentative', because when the conflicting meeting is
postponed, I would have a clue that I can now accept the original
invitation. Anyone know a trick to let the inviter know you decline, but
still keep track of the meeting in your own calendar ?

Use the tentative option.
