How to create a DUN

M

ms

XP Pro desktop.

This used machine has an ethernet cable in back, maybe never before used
DUN.

I need to create a DUN. The methods I'm used to in W2K and W98 do not
appear here.

In Control Panel, there are several possibilities, (Accessories does not
appear)

Network Connections: empty

Network Setup Wizard: gets to hardware check, a generic modem is shown,
but wizard does not proceed.

Phone & Modem Options: I entered my ISP.

In Device Manager, I see the modem and IMO it appears installed.

What is the standard way to create a DUN in XP. From the above, do I need
the OS CD to fix this? If so, a problem as there was no CD with the
machine.

This is not expected behavior for the Network Setup Wizard. There is a
"Troubleshooter" button in the Properties of the modem icon in devmgmt.msc.

or start/run, type:
HH mk:mad:MSITStore:%windir%\Help\tshoot.chm::/tsmodem_result.htm
(OK the activeX)

Thanks, Mark.

I saved the help data, it looks like the usual network creation text from
W2K, etc.

There is BTW in Control Panel, a Wireless Network Setup icon/wizard, it
works but useless for me.

Here's what I see

In one of the help pages,
"By default, Windows dial-up networking connections bind the IPX/SPX and
TCP/IP protocols to the dial-up adapter. However, most Internet service
providers (ISPs) require only TCP/IP, Client for Microsoft Networks, and
the dial-up adapter to connect to the Internet."

This is strange: I never see that network protocols screen. When I click on
Network Connections, I should see it, but only see a blank screen.

In modem properties, I quiried the modem, it responded, so the modem is
installed.

Until I solve the above, I can't create a DUN.

If either this post or my Search post results in having to use the OS CD, I
will have to reformat and go to W2K.

Advice?

DUN is universally understood to mean Dialup Network.

True, but your original post mentioned only an Ethernet cable, and
didn't specifiy the make/model of modem you have installed, so Ricky's
question was quite reasonable. Your post made it seem as if you were
unaware of what "DUN" meant.

That's silly. This was in my OP, second line.
I need to create a DUN. The methods I'm **used to** in W2K and W98 do not

The modem model matters in details of modem properties, not in creating a
DUN

So there have been 2 replies that don't help in solving the problem, just
show people don't read the OP. And if someone does not know what DUN stands
for, he should certainly learn about it.

I am trying to decide if I have to remove XP and replace with W2K, where I
have the CD, and these kind of replies don't help.

Not always true..if you're using an ethernet modem a DUN is not needed the
modem does the connecting. That's why I was asking about the modem. If
you're using a dial up modem I usually go to the control panel..internet
options..connections tab and make a connection there.

That was the point of my OP. Someone previously used an Ethenet
connection, as the cable was hardwired in the back. I don't use
broadband, so have no use for Ethenet.

But Control Panel has no DUN setup anywhere, not in any normal location.
I conclude the shop that built the machine for the guy set him up with
Ethernet, and screwed up in installing XP to never add Accessories, or a
complete Network function. To me this is a partial installation. It's
odd, as the guy was a real newbie, and Ethernet is more complex than a
simple dialup setup.

Anyway, it looks like I am not getting an answer as to how to create a
DUN when the capability does not already exist in Network.

If you're wanting to make a dialup connection go to internet
options..connections tab..click the add button and from there you can make a
dial up connection.

Thanks, Ricky, that worked, I created a DUN, went online, You brought up
a clue that wasn't mentioned in any W2K or W98 data that I saw. Now, the
DUN I created appears in Network Connections, as it normally would.

Now I only have one major glitch with XP, a non-functional Search
problem. No one here answered (?), it did not fit into the Search problem
posts here that I saw. so I will do a Google search and see about it.

Richard in AZ

Go back to the Control Panel, Internet Connections.
In the left side panel, select "Make new connection".
Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the Internet manually using a dialup modem.
