How to configure Internet Explorer to open documents

We have files that we display in a Web Folder via WebDav. When I double
click a file, it immediately opens IE to try and read the file (which fails).
I need it to prompt me for which application to use to open the document.
Some PC's prompt and it works great, but others don't prompt. There is no
"Shift-Right Click, Open With" available.

How do I get the prompting to set the association? I've found and tried the
following link but with no success.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];162059
This is for Office documents, but we need it for an .LIS extension.

Any ideas?

Either the file type is not registered properly or the open action for that
file type is associated incorrectly with IE. See this article for possible
help:

HOW TO: Specify the Program Used to Open Certain Types of Files in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306551/en-us

File types list can be reached by going to My Computer...Tools...Folder
Options...File Types. Look for your .lis extension. If there, click to
highlight it, click Advanced button, click to highlight the open action,
click Edit button and make sure the path to the program you want to use is
in the "Application...." box. If your file type is not listed, then click
the New button, add the extension, then go back and add the open action for
that file type and the application path.

Thanks for the input. Actually, there was already an .LIS extension for the
file types. If I copy the document from Web Folder to the local machine, it
works fine. It's when I try to open it inside of the Web Folder, it defaults
to IE, not the application configured for the .LIS extension. It has the
correct icon displaying in the Web Folder but somewhere the association is
broken.

I've tried removing and recreating the file type association, same result.

I also noticed that it's not just the .LIS extention. I tried to open a
..LOG file in the same Web Folder. The icon displaying looked to be for
Notepad, but when I double click I get IE.

Thanks again,
Brian

The server, then, probably isn't signaling the correct MIME type for the
file. For example, see this article dealing with the .pdf file type:

Internet Explorer Opens a Blank Page with a Placeholder Icon Instead of a
..pdf File in Adobe Acrobat Reader
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305153

See
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...ogies/iis/maintain/featusability/mimeiis.mspx
for setting MIME types for your file types for use in your web folders on
your server.

Also, make sure "browse in same window" is not checked in File Types.
