What is the best way to compress a video file (300MB) so I can email it. Should I give up and just burn it to CD?

To email that size file, you'd need about 100X compression which is
unrealistic. You will have to compromise on resolution or quality or
both to get it small enoough to email. If you can't compromise on those
parameters, then CD is your best bet.

My current rule of thumb is about 2 MB per minute of movie gets you a pretty
good one for emailing or playing from a website. That would be a WMV format
file.

Greetings:

I have the same problems at times, then I have to find a
work around way. I have found a software which when used
does help me solve the problem, but may not be practical
to some. Its a file splitter which you can read about it
from http://www.gdgsoft.com/gsplit/ I have placed the
web site address for you. It is the next best thing.

The only problem is that lets say you set up a file size
30MB. You tell it to spolit that up into file sizes of
2MD each. Thats 15 individual files.

Well, when this is split up for you, it also sets up a
file called the Uniting file. So tahts a total number of
files of 16. You then send 16 files through your email
client to where you want it to go. When the person
receives the 16 files on their end, they must open up
their email client and download all the files into one
folder. After that is done, they click the Uniting file
(which is clearly indicated) and the files are all united
together. Thats it. The files have been delivered and
reunited in their completed format.

The only real time consuming task here really is the
sending and receiving of the 16 files. If there was a
program that could send them automatically one at a time
and then receive them onthe other end and download them
one at a time, this wold be the PERFECT software and the
sending of large files through the internet would not be
a TIME CONSUMING issue. Sorry the Caps are not shouting,
only to emphasise. But This file splitter is thenext best
thing to the solution. A ZIP FILE will not do, because as
we are delaing in video and slide shows, these files are
already compressed, and as you now compressed files
quality do suffer when being played back. So with the
above splitter one can send AVI files without the need to
compress, but remember the number of files being created.

Please check this out. If you need assistance here, let
me know, because I have been there and done that, and I
love to share what I have learned with others.

Now I hope someone can assit me with my problem which I
shall post after this reply.

Hope this helps.
