How do use a Sharepoint contact list in outlook

I have just uploaded an Access Contact list to my sharepoint site but when I
go to "Actions" and try to "Connect to Outlook" the option is not available.
Do I have to do something to make Sharepoint realise my list is a contact
list??

First thing you need to do is post the versions of SharePoint, Outlook and
Access. Once that configuration is known, an answer may be possible.

Is this a sharepoint contacts library or just a list that happens to be of
contacts? To link to outlook it needs to be a sharepoint contacts library.

AFAIK, linking to a DB won't create a true contacts library - you need to
create the library in SPS and switch to datasheet view. Then arrange the
access fields in the same order as in SPS, copy them from the table view and
paste into the datasheet. If Access has additional fields, add them to SPS
before the copy and paste - but AFAIK, only the basic fields sync to
outlook.
