when I search, Word only searches the text box if the insertion point
is in there. it's a pain to click outside the box and then search. any
shortcut or workaround?

Assuming you *do* have Text Boxes rather than other AutoShapes containing
text, click the 'Highlight all Items Found In:' checkbox, then click Find
All. The 'Main Document' and 'All Text Boxes in Main Document' will be
searched.

If this doesn't solve the problem, please provide more specific info,
including version of Word.

That worked great. Is it possible to have it checked and to have "Main
Document" selected as the default?
