how do i open a default setup word doc as something has changed

when i open a new word doc the insertion point is at the top of the page. It
used to be lower, about one inch from the top. If I then view headers and
footers and close, the insertion point is now in the correct place. I would
like to get the insertion point to be in this place when i open a new doc as
it was before. Something has changed.
