How do I stop Outlook 2007 from opening Word?

I have a brand new machine with fresh copies of XP, Outlook 2007, and Word
2007. Whenever I open an incoming email or start a new one, Outlook opens a
phantom/disabled Word window that I cannot close without exiting Outlook.

How do I stop this irritating behavior?

Check again whether it is really the latest driver. You also might want
to contact Matrox. The issue is directly related to that graphics
driver, and Matrox has provided fixed drivers earlier for cards. I don't
remember though which cards had fixed drivers/
