how do I stop email attachments from becoming dat files?

when I try to forward email in Outlook with attachments the attachments
become dat files and most people can't open or read them. How can I stop
this. Most of the attachments I am forwarding are articles or word
documents, sometimes pictures. It doesnt' seem to happen when I am attaching
something to an original email that I write and send out. I have office 2003.

First thing to do is to not send the mail in Rich Text Format, if you're
doing that.
