Email attachments in Outlook

I have recently changed PCs and am using Outlook instead of Outlook Express. No one can read my attachments as they say they are .dat files. Also some recipients have let me know that I have sent an attachments as .dat files even when I have not sent any attachment at all. How do I ensure the attachments I send as usual as Microsoft Word files go as Word files?
Also I tried to sent a technical support email to Microsoft but can't find the email address. Can anyone let me know what it is?
Many thanks!

Try formatting your messages as either plain text or html and not Rich Text.

I don't know about an email address for MS.
