how do I set the WEP channel in WinXP for wireless connectivity?

Hi,

how do I set the WEP channel in WinXP for wireless connectivity? I
can't seem to connect to a network called 'linksys' as no wireless
networks are found in range. I think it is because my 'linksys' network
is WEP on channel 11 but in WinXP I see no way configuring my 'linksys'
receive on channel 11. Would there be another reason?

You have to create a profile in the prefered network box of your wireless
connection. The profile will hold your WEP keys.

The WEP key and the wireless network channel are two different things
entirely.

Okeydoekey. Where do I set the wireless network channel of 11? I
already have another laptop and a PC both with linksys hardware and
software which work fine wirelessly. This new laptop is supposed to be
able to connect wirelessly but can't seem to find any wireless network.

You do not set the channel for your clients. The channel will be set
automatically by software as soon as the router is seen by the clients. Give
us the following info:

1)What Model/Manufacturer are the client adapters?
2)What Model/Manufacturer is the Router?
3)Before setting up the WEP security, you should see if you can connect
without WEP enabled.
4)Are you using XP SP1 or XP SP2?
5)Are you using the Manufacturers client utility or Windows XP SP2 WZC?
6)Whats the IP address, Subnet and default gateway of your computer(s) and
do you have DHCP enabled?

Generally you don't need to. If you are using Wireless Zero Configuration
(the "Let Windows configure my wireless connection" setting) and are
broadcasting an SSID from the base station then Windows will find the router
and channel correctly on its own.

If you are not using WZC but the utility that came with your wireless
card/adapter it should also be capable of finding the correct channel and
router by SSID broadcast.

If you have turned off the SSID broadcast on your router turn it back on.
