How do I run the "guided help" from the recovery counsel?

I posted before about my PC not starting and getting the error message,
"Windows cannot start because of a missing or corrupt boot file
\Windows\Sys32\Config\System" From my reply I followed a link to the
knowledge base where I saw a link to the "Guided Help" file that does
everything in the article. My question is, How do I run the guided help file
from the Floppy drive, "A:" from the recovery counsel that shows
"C:\WINDOWS>" ?
No matter what I type there is only one thing it EVER reads, "BAD COMMAND
......
I tried the CD and CHDIR command to get to the A: drive ... BAD COMMAND BAD
FILE NAME ...or whatever. I hate dos. Any way, could someone please tell me
how this file can be run?
Thank you very much for your patience.

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>a:
The system cannot find the drive specified. (I don't have an A: drive.)

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>"a:"
'"a:"' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

I can't get that error message..

What happens when you type

DIR

Do you get a listing of file in a folder, or the same error message? If
the "Bad Command" message, the command interpreter isn't being loaded.
What you do about that, I don't know.

Ok Elmo
If you had a floppy drive and you needed to run a program from the recovery
counsel, how would you go about it? And please be detailed about it.

Just as you're trying to do it. Did you try the DIR command? That was
a test to see if you get the same error message.

I get the Directory list when I type "Dir"
But please just tell me how I run a file from the A: (floppy) drive from the
recovery counsel? or does anyone else know?

The recovery console only gives you a few options and doesn't give you
an actual command or DOS window.

If you're referring to this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/en-us

.. I don't see how Guided Help can perform the operations for this
problem. It states:

• You must be logged on to Windows by using a computer administrator
account to install and to use this Guided Help.
• You must be running Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional,
Windows XP Media Center Edition, or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition to
install and to use this Guided Help.

That, along with these statements:

For some tasks, you can select to run Guided Help in one of the
following ways.
• Do it automatically: The whole task is automatically completed while
you watch. You might be prompted for input if input is required.
• Show me step-by-step: Guided Help points on the screen to whereyou
must click or type to perform the task.

.. suggests that you have to run Guided Help on another system and use
the "Show me step-by-step" option since it will be running on another
system.

Sorry I didn't see earlier what you were trying to do.

OK here is the title of the KB article:
"How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from
starting"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q307545

There are instructions what to do
OR
They have a file that a person can download and use to do the same task.
I have downloaded the file and put it on a floppy disk.
My question is how do I execute the file from the Recovery Counsel prompt?
Please do not reply unless you know the answer.
Thank you.

I gave the answer.. load it on another computer and read its
instructions. That's the same article I referenced in the last reply,
and the answer is the same: that feature is not available since you
can't access the floppy from the Recovery Console prompt.

If you're still working on this problem, you might want to try
the following.

I'm taking for granted that you've already downloaded the
Guided Help file named 307545.exe to your working computer.
Double click on that file.
Select "Another computer" when you're asked where you want to
run Guided Help.
Hit Next and select "Do it automatically".
The program should now download a file named Guided_Help.exe.
Before you hit the Next button, do the following.
Open up Windows Explorer or My Computer and navigate to your C
drive.
There should be a folder on C whose name is a bunch of random
letters and numbers.
Open this folder and copy the following files to your Desktop.

regcopy1.txt
regcopy2. txt
regcopyreadme.txt

Close the folder and return to Guided Help.
Save Guided_Help.exe to your Desktop.
Close the program.

Copy the following files to a floppy disk.

Guided_Help.exe
regcopy1.txt
regcopy2.txt

Open regcopyreadme.txt.
This document gives you the procedure to use on the problem
computer.
Start the Recovery Console on the problem computer.
Once you've logged on, put the disk you created earlier in the
floppy drive.
Type the following after the C:\Windows prompt.

batch A:\regcopy1.txt.

Hit Enter.
When the file copying is finished, take out the floppy.
Type Exit at the prompt and hit the Enter key.
Don't boot off the CD, let the computer boot into Windows.
Once you're logged on to Windows, run Guided_Help.exe off the
floppy.

What you do from here on may differ from the instructions
outlined in regcopyreadme.txt.
The best scenario is that System Restore will be able to take
the system back to a time before the problem started.

Good luck

I hate to keep bothering this newsgroup with this, but I clicked on the
"Guided Help" file and got this error, "Class Already Exists".
I should mention that when I could not boot up my PC, I installed Win XP Pro
on my other partition. That is what I am using as my good PC. Maybe I should
follow the manual instructions from the KB article instead.

Thank you for your help.

Sorry, I don't have an answer. But no one else is trying.. You might
look through these Google Groups search results for help:

http://groups.google.com/groups/search?q="Class+Already+Exists"+guided+help&qt_s=Search+Groups

Do the same search without "Guided Help" and you'll get many more posts.
