Cannot start Windows. Missing or corrupt boot file

Everything was working great when I last had my Win XP Pro PC on the night
before. Then I turn it on this morning and logged on ... just as my desktop
icons showed, the screen went black and I get the message, "Windows cannot
start because of a missing or corrupt boot file \Windows\Sys32\Config\System"

Then it went on to read that I could try to repair it by inserting the
install disk and typing "R" at the prompt. So I did and the recovery counsel
came up, but I am lost at this point.

Can anyone please tell me what to do at this point?
Everything is on that PC that I need.

Thank you.
