How do I prevent deleting files on Windows partitioning

Hi there,

I have a dual boot configuration with Windows XP SP3 and Ubuntu 9.04. My
Windows partition is accessible from Ubuntu file manager but not the
opposite. Furthermore, I have full write access on my Windows partition.
Can this be considered as a Windows security hole? I would say yes - I
could for example delete my windows account by just deleting the
relevant directory - haven't tried this. How can I prevent this from
happening?

Deny physical access to the drive. Put your two OS's on separate drives,
and swap them as needed. This is the only sure way to prevent one from
accessing the other.

The "security hole" goes both ways - from Windows, Ubuntu can't defend
itself while it's not running, either. You can easily find ways to access
and alter files, or just delete the Ubutnu partition.

I don't know, that's why I am asking :)

If there is no solution then I suppose the answer is BE CAREFUL - which
is fine with me ...

Windows cannot access the Linux drive because it doesn't have a native
file system driver for the Linux file systems, on the other hand your
Linux version has an NTFS driver so it can access the Windows partition.

If you want to hide the Windows drive while you are using Linux use a
third party boot manager that has the ability to automatically hide the
drive from other operating systems when they boot, XOSL can do this.
