how do I keep words together so they don't split and wrap?

At one time, wasn't there a feature such as "control-spacebar" that kept the
words it was between, connected? I am using Word 2007, and I need a quick and
direct way to prevent widow/orphan words, as opposed to widow/orphan lines.
For example:

Dr. Steve Smith

vs.

Dr. Steve
Smith
