How do I disable IEEE1394 as a Network Adapter?

It has been suggested that I will get more reliable performance from my
FireWire drive if I disable the IEEE1394 adapter as a network device in the
Network Bridge.
So, I guess I have the following questions:
1 - How can I do this safely, without messing up the actual connectivity to
the external drive? Is it as simple as opening the Network connections and
disabling it from there?
2 - I use LAN for my network - will disabling the FireWire device as a
network adapter affect anything in any way?
3 - Are there any "Gotchas" I should be aware of please?

Yes

No

Not with this procedure as such. Just remember that you've done this if you
try and transfer stuff between two PCs over firewire in the future as you'll
want to switch it back on in order for that to work...

I would be wary of a product that needed you to do this in order to work
properly, it sounds like a crap product to me. However if you've already
purchased it then its too late to worry about that I guess.

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked:
"Have you checked (event viewer / syslog)".
