How do I create a reference to a listed item in word?

My list is a list of references, Apendix A.

An example of a listed item is as follows:
Ref. 1 "SiS sections from WNW System Segment Spec"' 2/21/03
The #1 is a field which is as follows: { SEQ Ref. _ \* ARABIC }

Within my text, usually a footnote, I have something like this: (Ref. 1)
The "Ref. 1" is also a field and in an older version appears as follows:
{ REF _Ref90809026 \h }
These links or cross-references are boken. How do I fix this?
Is there a way to get these items, my list of references, listed within the
dialog box that appears with Insert/Reference/Cross-reference?

1. To check whether the bookmarks used by the cross-references the footnotes
(or whereever) are still existant, you can use Insert/Bookmark. click the
"hidden bookmarks" checkbox a couple of times, until the list of bookmarks
that begin with an underscore (_) show up. To go to a particular bookmark,
select it in the list, then click "Go to".

2. to get a SEQ field label to show up in the list of cross-references, you
first have to define it as a caption label on your machine. (Yeah, it's
machine-specific.) Insert/Reference/Caption. click "New Label" and type: Ref.

What's the brokenness? The links don't work?

By the way, Ref 1 appearing as { REF_gibberish } is just the difference
between viewing Field Codes and Field Results. Press alt-F9 to switch
between the two.

What version of Word are you using?

Here's one approach to what you are doing (though it appears to answer a
different question, it will work)--you could use cross-references to a
numbered list (although then you would type the Ref and only the 1 would be
from a field)

I don't know enough to know how a numbered list is different from numbers
created by SEQ fields, but the paragraph numbers on a numbered list will
certainly show up in the Insert | Cross-Reference dialog.

How did you create these in the first place if SEQ fields weren't an option
in the Cross-Reference dialog?

Okay, you hit the nail on the head. These broken links are "hidden
bookmarks". I added the new label, went into the originale document and
there they were. Just as you suggested, I double clicked on the hidden
bookmarks that appeared in the dialog box and in no time at all I was hitting
each of the listed references. But that's the old document.

This document came from another organization, and was given to us to
properly format and update. I believe that in the process of getting this
document into the proper format the links were broken. So, how do I get
hidden bookmarks for the revised document, because there are no hidden
bookmarks now for the Reference listing.

Cindy, has the right idea, but here are some answers for some of your
questions.

Ref90809026 is not gibberish. This is an addressing that is used for a
given item or location within the document, and not much different from what
is used in software development.

The version of Word is 2003 and I guess I should have stated that.

The company I work for received this document from another organization to
properly format and update. This is a very large document and was in very
bad condition. Graphics were inserted using any and every method possible.
Some were centered. Some were left justified, and some were even right
justified. Go figure. Indentation was another issue. No consistency at
all. So you see, I’ve had my hands full.

Look at Cindy’s reply and my response to her for other answers.

In that case, you might want to consider that SEQ fields are not necessarily
the best way to number a list of references in the Appendix, especially
since it will require you to create a new "caption" and use the caption
style. You might want to consider a numbered list or LISTNUM fields, both
of which will natively show up in the cross-reference dialog as Numbered
Items, rather than recreating the SEQ fields from the old, screwy document
and using a feature for a purpose it may not be best suited for.
