How do I connect 2 PCs?

I try to connect my old Win98 to my new WinXP, to copi files etc. Have connected with right type of network cable (both machines have network card). Have configured TCP/IP, shared files etc. Try to find the one machine on the other. Nothing happens. Please help!

Run the Network Setup Wizard on the Windows XP machine by doing the
following:
1. Go to Control Panel.
2. Select the Network Connections or the Network and Internet Connections
option.
3. From the Network Connections Folder, select the Network Setup Wizard in
left pane of this window.
4. The Network Setup Wizard will provide instructions on how to configure
the Win98 computer.

Thanks.

By right type of cable, you do mean a RJ45 crossover cable, yes?
