I am hyperlinking several external PPT files into a Slide Show. When I select

I wouls like to hav the files close once the return action buttton is
selected.

Link your "return" button to End Show and you'll be returned to the point of
origin and the file will be closed.

It sounds like you have no control over this. The "Return" button on the
hyperlinked files should be to "Exit Show." If it is doing something
else, and you can't change it, I don't think there is much you can do. If
they are your external files, then make the link for the "Return" button
take the Action Setting of Hyperlink to "End Show."

After searching for posts on how to effectively close a hyperlinked PowerPoint 2010 presentation and return to the invoking presentation, it appears that the common wisdom is to insure that the return object action is set to "End Show" or else making the return with a direct link to the invoking presentation.

While these actions cause return to the invoking presentation, they do not actually close the task from the operating system and, worse, they initiates another instance of the invoking presentation.

Consequently these multiple copies of the presentations will soon exhaust the system resources if the links are used frequently.

Is there any way to insure that when an external presentation invoked by another external presentation is closed, it will not only return to the invoking program but also terminate and remove the invoked PowerPoint presentation from Windows 7 ?

Does this require a VBA macro? If so, any advice on how to implement this return function would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance...Bob Lennon
