How do I close a "dialogue Box" to open a file

Having trouble opening a Word document I've been working on on a portable
hard drive. The message is asking me to close a dialogue box to open the file.

Copy the file to your hard drive then open it. Never open or save a file
directly to/from removeable media.

Dialog boxes opening behind the displayed application were a common problem
when Norton AV's office plug-in was enabled. Turn off the plug-in if
applicable. Otherwise minimise Word and see what the dialog box that is open
actually says.
