How can I hook up a CD and a DVD for sound

I'm wondering how I can hook up my slave CD and my master DVD to sound. I
noticed that only the CD has sound. How do you in this group do this. Can I
have both hooked up for sound, and how do I do it. Maybe most of the people
only have the master device wired for sound. Can I get an idea please

I have both devices on the secondary channel. The DVD is master and the CD-RW is
slave. Only the CD-RW has the audio cable connected to the mobo. Both can
deliver sound to the system. Note: The DVD does NOT have the digital sound
enabled. I can only assume that the data cable handles the DVD sound.

I'm pretty sure that I have mine setup the same way. For sure the slave CD
has the audio cable hooked up but not the DVD though. I tried to play a DVD
movie, "The Hire", that I had for a while, I was able to watch it, but
didn't hear any sound. The speakers were on of course....I don't understand
the secondary channel explanation. Can you elaborate for me please. I'm a
senior citizen :) and have to learn this still......Peter

What software are you using to play the DVD movie? Maybe you need the codecs for
the audio.

The secondary channel I referred to pertains to the IDE channel on your
motherboard. The primary channel is usually used for the system's hard drive(s).
Sometimes users will install an optical drive as a slave unit on the primary. I
was simply stating how my system is configured....just for your information.

Microsoft offers a free utility that you can download and run to determine if
you have the proper codecs in your system. Here's the link:

Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility

Let me know if it shows your system to be lacking the video codecs.

Off Topic: I noticed that you appear to have used your regular e-mail address in
these postings. Not a good idea....it should be altered. See the section titled,

Analog sound uses the extra wire connection for CDs. Digital sound for CDs
and DVDs is via the wide data cable. Suggest you try going to Device Manager
and right clicking the problem drive. Select Properties and go to the
Properties tab. Do you have enable digital sound for this device checked?
