my cd and dvd drives are present in the device manager and open and close
properly, but when I put a music cd in, it wont play. Also, when i try to
burn a cd through musicmatch it says "no cd/dvd drives detected. please hook
up a compatable drive and try again"

Thank you for the reply mr barry. I did as you said and the icons are
there. When I put a cd in, the green light blinks, but the cd never loads.
I can open the cd, but it still wont play. Also, all of the cd burning
programs still dont detect a drive.

Did you apply Doug Knox's fix as Rich Barry suggested? If not, that's your
next step. If you did, then you have a hardware issue. Since you've told us
nothing about your computer (desktop or laptop? age? make/model? etc.), all
I can suggest is that you do some hardware troubleshooting.

Only you know whether you are comfortable opening up your computer so either
supply more details or take the machine to a local computer professional. I
don't suggest using a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place.

first i'd like to thank everyone for helping. I tried doug knox's fix, but
it didnt seem to help. I have a dell 8400 desktop computer. Its about 4
years old. At first I was getting a message code 39 and neither drive was
working. I applied the fix that was suggested and the device manager says
they are working properly, but they wont load cd's and dvds. also all the cd
burning programs say that theres no drives hooked up. Ive uninstalled and
reinstalled. no good.

Then you know it's a hardware issue, either the drives and/or the
motherboard.

Time to buy a new drive.
Most likely the laser optics are out of alignment and only the manufacture would have the tools to
align them.

Also try the following. You should back up the registry before making
changes:

Click Start, Run, type Regedit, click OK.
Locate this Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the
data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot
