How can I get XP to stop doing . . .

Yesterday, I had to do a complete reinstall of my HP printer software. I
followed HP's instructions to the letter, including using their
"scrubber" tool before the new install. New install went fine, and all
works well, both printer and XP, except for one annoyance:

Since the reinstall, every time I boot or reboot my computer, the last
thing that happens before the hourglass disappears from the desktop at
the end of boot is the Windows "Preparing to install" window. It comes
up for anywhere between a split second and 2-3 seconds, then disappears.
As if it's ready to install something, sees there is nothing to install,
and then quits. Everything else works fine, but is there a way I can
get XP to stop doing that? Yes, it is harmless, but very annoying. Any
help much appreciated!

printing software is not
very good. it is bloated at
almost 600 megs,
takes up too much memory
and poorly written.

what i strongly recommend
is to uninstall that hp printer
software, run a registry cleaner
then reboot:

afterwards, only install the
printer drivers (emphasis is
on the drivers only).

as long as the printer drivers
are installed you will be able
to print from any windows
program efficiently.

in regards to the features from
hp software, you can get
better results and more features
from other software available
off the net, for example the
photo center via www.walmart.com
and their photo program download.

Appreciate the postback, DB. First off, you are correct about the HP
software, on both counts. What I did finally was use SysRestore to go
back to Fri. evening before I discovered the problem (Sat. morning, when
I went to scan something). Scan software was either non-functioning or
non-existent (it was there two weeks ago), so it asked for the HP
install disc to reinstall it. Then "scan" worked fine, but from that
reboot on is where I had the problem. So, I reverted to Friday night,
and as counter-intuitive as it sounds, repeated the same procedure: It
asked for the HP disk, installed(?) the software, and then I could scan
fine again. And this time - no "Windows is installing" box pops up
after reboot (have tried it twice - it's OK now).

But the bottom line is what you said: HP's "bundle" leaves much to be
desired, but never at any time was I without the ability to print
whatever I wanted. It was the *scan* feature that was gone, and to
restore that, it had to be their own software files for this particular
printer.

yeh, the scan part is tricky
but possible to install only
the scan driver as i have done.

there are two drivers
for this:

one is dedicated
for the hp scanning module
of its software and

then there is a twain driver for use by
windows. if you look into
the windows directory there
should be a twain folder.

if the twain driver is
installed, then window
programs like mspaint and
microsoft office 03 document
scanning program will
initiate your hp scanner
without the hp bloatware.

since my scanner has been
functioning flawlessly for
a long time, i don't readily
remember all the steps to
take.

however, i recall that the
services via admin tools there
is a wia - windows image
acquisition that should be enabled

also, i think you might have
to add the hp scan driver via
add hardware method instead
of the add scanner/camera control
panel.

with the add hardware
you can then get it to scan
the hp disk for the scan driver.

but these are from the top
of my head.
