how can I get Word to default to the "Home" ribbon setting

How can I get Word to stay on the HOME ribbon setting unless I change it.
When I start typing, it defaults back to the Settings only view and I have to
select a setting to get a ribbon to show up.

I have no idea what you mean by "the Settings only view", but it sounds like
you've collapsed the ribbon. That can happen if you press Ctrl+F1 or
double-click one of the tabs along the top of the ribbon. To reverse it,
just press Ctrl+F1 or double-click one of the tabs again.
