HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
Set the value of AutoShareServer to 0
Set the value of AutoShareWks to 0

There is no downside in disabling the administrative shares.

Can XP Home have Admin shares added to it using this method in reverse?

I don't know and I can't find out since I don't have ready
access to an XP Home PC. If you can't then you can
easily create some other share, even via a Command
Prompt if you like:

net share C=C:\

Thanks. Maybe I will try. The value of true admin shares, of course, is that
admin's already know the sharename and don't have to check a box to see what
is shared before connecting and doing admin work. Since the root of the C
folder is not usually shared (other than the admin share), I find working on
a network with mixed Home/Pro machines to be a bit of a pain.

Right click, Properties. Click "Not Shared" and Apply. Then select
Shared, "C" (no $), and Apply.
