Home Networking Problem

Hi I am running 2 computers with WinXPPro on them both hooked to a Belkin
dsl/router hooked to my NetDSl800 router on MSN. They both where able to
connect with each other, print from 1 printer and transfer files, etc. They
both connect to the internet by ok and since i added Windows Spyware and both
upgraded the SP2, I cannot connect to each other. Oh I also have been running
McAfee for ever with no problems at all. I too love the sevice pack but
wondering what i can do or do I need remove to get my home network back
working again.
I turned off both firewalls and it did not help.
I went to the CMD screen and have pinged the IP addresses to both computers
and it responded but when I pinged the computer names, it worked on only 1.
Tom

Thanks

Tom,

What is "Windows Spyware"? Do you mean Microsoft Anti-Spyware?

When you upgraded to SP2, Windows Firewall was activated. Did you activate the
File and Printer Sharing exception?

Are you running McAfee Personal Firewall and Windows Firewall simultaneously?
Does WF not deactivate itself when you do that? One of the two should
deactivate - you can't run two firewalls simultaneously.

Hi Chuck, yes running Microsoft anti-spyware,Yes to the firewall and I did
activate the file and printing sharing. I am only running McAfee Antivirus.
I tried turning off Windows firewall to connect to the other and no luck. I
run the home network wizard and make a disk like I've done before and then
put it in the other computer, it runs and re-boot both and still nothing.
Like I said before I can ping the IP addresses to both but thats it.
I guess the biggest thing is that both computers are hooked up to differant
printers. One is my photo printer and the other is my normal printer and it
used to be that I could print both on my normal one, then when I'm working on
photo's I switch in the pull down box when i am printing.
Thanks, Tom

Tom,

Well, deactivating the firewall won't help by itself, if you have other
problems. And it's normally supposed to deactivate itself automatically, but
you never can tell, so I always ask.

So when you say "when I pinged the computer names, it worked on only 1", what
specifically are you seeing for the other? Ping is a good diagnostic when you
examine its output properly, but "didn't work" doesn't really help.

Let's start with "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, as
diagnostic aides. Please read this article, and linked articles:

Hi Chuck. Well I went to your site and I got it. I did so much that I am not
sure what I did. But I did make a restore point on both computers.
Thanks again:)

Hi Tom,

Well, I'm not sure what "it" was that you got, or that you did. But if you're
seeing any progress resolving your problem, then that's a start.

Thanks for the feedback.
