Home Networking conundrum

Hello All.
I have 2 winxp pro boxes connected to an adsl modem via a lynksys 4 port
router.
The main computer (John) and the secondary computer (George...you guessed
it, the network is named BEATLES) can both surf the net. George can see and
use the printer attached to John, but John cannot access the shared
drives/folders on George and vice versa. Georeg can access the web-based
router setup utility, but not the shared folders/drives on John. When a
search for computers on the network is done, both computers find the other,
but when accessing the computer after the search I get the error message that
'\\george is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The network path was not found.'
Help!!! I can't sort this out, no matter what I try. ANY help would be
GREATLY appreciated!!
Cheers,
Phil

Do you have any firewalls installed? If so, try uninstalling them. (In many
cases, disabling them is not enough).

I have Norton Internet Security, but this connection has worked in the past,
with NIS. The last time these 2 boxes were networked, believe it or not, was
when the second computer was a 98se box. I've turned of, disbaled, bypassed,
etc this firewall with no luck. I'll try a complete uninstall/reinstall in
the hopes that it might allow the connection to pass.
Cheers.

SYMPTOMS
On Windows XP-based computers that are configured as members of a workgroup
in a peer-to-peer network environment, you may experience one or more of the
following behaviors:
a.. You cannot access shared folders or files.
b.. You cannot locate other computers in the workgroup.
c.. You receive the following error message when you double-click the
workgroup in My Network Places:

Workgroup Name is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this
network resource.
CAUSE
This behavior may occur if both the following conditions are true:
a.. NetBIOS over TCP/IP is not turned on (enabled) on one or more
computers in the workgroup.
b.. The Computer Browser service is not started or is turned off on one or
more computers in the workgroup.

1. If the computers run the original or SP1 versions of Windows XP,
disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on local area
network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem connection
to the Internet. If they run SP2, enable the exception for file and
printer sharing in the Windows Firewall. Disable and un-install all
other firewall programs while troubleshooting. When un-installing a
firewall program, use the un-install procedure provided by the
manufacturer . Don't use Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs,
which might not completely un-install it.

For more information, see:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/netbt.htm

4. Run "ipconfig /all" on XP and look at the "Node Type" at the
beginning of the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer" (which should
actually be "Point-to-Point") that's the problem. It means that the
computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on a
peer-to-peer network, for NetBIOS name resolution.

If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".

When I run ipconfig/all on the main pc (John) I get 'unknown' in node type.

Check the node type on both computers. 'Unknown' is OK. Only
'Peer-to-Peer' indicates a problem.

to do the trick.

.

Does any of the two computers install any anti virus
software? If it does, it may be because of the firewall
of the anti virus program. Try to disable the firewall on
both computer, it would be fine.

You're welcome, Phil. The default setting should work, but I've seen
it fail many time, particularly in networks that use home broadband
routers like the ones from Linksys.
