Home Network Problem: One Computer not Accessible to Others

We have three computer using XP Home SP2 on a home network. Computer A
connects by ethernet to router. Computers B and C connect wireless to
router. Computer A was infected by some viruses and adware. after several
days, I finally got rid of all the bugs (I think). However, Computer A has
two problems: 1. I can not access Windows Firewall (the radio buttons are
gray)--not a big deal because I have Zone Lab Firewall, but the other two
computers also use Zone Labs Firewall, and I can still select Windows
Firewall if I want; and 2. I can not access Computer A from Computer B or C,
although Computer A can access bothe B and C. The message I get:"\\Computer
A is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator...Logon failure: the user has not been
granted the requested logon type at this computer." I suspect a corrupted
driver or registry, but Windows Troubleshooter did not fix this. I also
reloaded SP2, but that did not fix it either. The error log shows two
recurring problems that may relate: 1.'Windows Firewall/Internet Connector
Sharing (ICS) service terminated with the following error: The class is
configured to run as a security id different from the caller." and 2."The
name 'WorkGroup: 1d' could not be registered on the interface with IP address
xxx.xxx.x.100. The machine with the IP address xxx.xxx.x.102 did not allow
the name to be claimed by this machine." Any ideas?

It sounds like you might be logged in as a user rather than as an
admin. If you log in as admin and still get greyed out firewall
selections then you are seeing what a domain user usually sees when
there is a Windows server handling network security. It's possible that
the registry has been corrupted. I reckon you'll probably get sorted if
you run the MS home network wizard.

I am the administrator on the computer (actually, all users have that
capacity). I already ran the Network Wizard--twice. No fix yet.

Cliffy,

The error "...the user has not been granted the requested logon type..." is well
known, though with XP Home will require some work to resolve.

I am having the exact same issue. I noticed last night the pc I cannot
connect to had a worm, w32.spybot.worm. I used symantec to remove the worm
in safe mode as per Symantec instructions. Rescanned, and everything was
clean. I still cannot connect and share files or the printer. I tried
changed from advanced file sharing to simple file sharing to no avail. I
think something may be hosed in the registry or local policy. When I try to
open local policy, I get an error message stating group policy may over right
whatever changes I make. I think this worm is the culprit. Symantec also
stated to check some registry settings, which I did, but did not find any
issues. ICS is also started, but I cannot get the windows firewall out of a
grey status. Any thoughts?? This issue is deeper than the information on
the microsoft site. Being a network admin at a company, I know many of the
tricks to get computers to communicate. This one is stumping me.

Chuck,

I went to that site. I assumed the main fix was the registry keys.
However, the keys hklm\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa and
hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmanserver\parameters do not exist
(at least as far as I can tell). But they do not exist on any of my three
computers--and the other two can access each other, while this computer can
access the other two, but the other two can not access this one (which is the
primary computer). Does a key not existing mean it has a value of "0"?

If a "value" doesn't exist, it's default is usually "0". I'm not sure why
you're missing an entire key structure though.

But I think here we're talking about restrictanonymous, which is not the only
item in question. Read this article, please, more carefully.

Chuck,

I rechecked and did find
HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa\restrictanonymous. set to "1". I
changed that to "0". There was no key for
HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmanservices\parameter\restrictnullsessaccess.
This did not solve the problem, however. I ensured "guest" was enabled and
activated--still no help. I disbabled simple file sharing and set the
folders to share (they were already set to do so)--still no go. The
perplexing thing is I have used this network successfully for 3 years with no
previous problems--so what changed two weeks ago? I still think it may have
to do with corruptions to the firewall--but I really don't know how. (Windows
Firewall is off--but I can not access it. I disabled my Zone Alarm Firewall,
but that did not help, either.) The problem is in only one direction on one
computer. Anything else to try? Thanks

Did you try NTRights, in lieu of the LSP Editor?
But, the Local Security Policy editor, aka "secpol.msc" is not included in
Windows XP Home. In this case, you have to run NTRights, and enter the following
commands (precisely as shown below):
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

Chuck,

The NTRights did the trick. Thanks. I have noticed in reviewing the
problems over the past week or so that this particular concern has occurred
15% of the problems. Any idea why? A virus? A recent Windows Update (I
know sometimes they do strange things to this computer--particularly limiting
urls. I have to remove and re=install to clear the problem.) I still can
not select Windows Firewall, though. But the system does know Zone Alarm
Firewall is active??? Thanks again.
