cguil, moderators can read deleted posts...... ;)

I first went to the IOW aged 11, on a school holiday and I've been back for Hols three times since.

Worked there for 3 weeks in '78 as well, in Cowes.

It's a really nice place, somehow unlike the rest of the UK, has an atmosphere all it's own. Loadsa places to visit and great for walks.

I lived in the IOW for... 6 years give or take.

Brilliant place to visit actually :D. Didn't think of it because i lived there so long... skimmed my head really.

Have a look around for holiday packages there, very calm, relaxed and quiet atmosphere :thumb:

Good luck :)

Only 'disadvantage' there is the lack of any 'Asdas' or any similar places. Not incredibley developed like that, but thats not what you're looking for methinks :)

In terms of places to visit, amenities and attractions - can you recommend the best place to stay to use as a base please? - assuming that I am not taking my car with me.

Why not try North Yorkshire - lots of beautiful dales particularly Teesdale and Swaledale with great walks, people and pubs. Good base in Richmond or Barnard Castle (just over the river in County Durham)

If you're going to the IOW, I'd recommend Shanklin or Ventnor as the places to stay.

And be sure to visit Blackgang Chine & Carisbrooke Castle & Alum Bay with the cliff chair lift, and, and... ;)
