ok so i have figured out why I can not open any links
from recived messages from outlook 2002 and it is because
of missing/corrupted registry key
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\com
mand
i was able to "follow" all the way to ..shell\open but
when i opened the open all that was there was default, is
this what is supposed to be there or is there supposed to
be another "file" called command? i was follwing the
direction from Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 310049
and have major proble with the directions, i only own one
computer and know no one in the area that is using
ooperating systme xp pro(apx 60 miles i live inthe middle
of no where ne) so where do i get a uncorruped copy of reg
key listed above? and am i looking for a "file" called
command or should there be a default and a command in the
open "file" (i am using file loosly because i understand
they probally aren't really files like my documents but
are actually probbally calledd keys?)

Unfortunatly i am proficant enough to be extreamly
dangrous TO MY OWN COMPUTER and get my self in a lot of
trouble when i start messing with the reg edit so I would
really appreicate some help with this since there does not
seem to be any computer tecs in my area that can help me
out. (the closest computer tec I've found that is willing
to even look at a laptop is about 250 miles away) thank
you tracy ps you can reply to this post or if you perfer

Hi Tracy :

Have you unticked in Tools\Options\Security\Do not allow files to open that
could contain a virus?. That's the main reason file attachments don't open.
Have you?... yes? ok; It seems your registry key is corrupted allright,
there is no .htmlfile\shell\open\command key on any of two computers I
looked in.

The correct key is; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.html with subkey;
PersistentHandler

Backup that key anyway as you should allways do before making any changes to
the registry, infact you should never make changes unless you know what you
are doing.

back it up to a diskette or to any folder in your computer; select .htmlfile
with right mouse button and from the menu select export, give it a name you
won't forget. That's in case you have to add the key back into the registry
wich is not very likely... but in case you do, just double click on the file
to add again into the registry.

After you create the backup, select .htmlfile and delete it from the
registry (the whole .htmlfile folder).

next select classes key (folder) and in the right pane click right mouse
button, select new key, rename it .html and in its right pane create three
new alfa numeric values and one new key.

Rename the three Alfa numeric values;

1st. Name it; (predetermined) open it and write; htmlfile

2nd. Name it; ContentType open it and write; text/html

3rd. Name it; PerceivedType open it and write; text

Rename the new key; (to rename press F2)

Name it; PersistentHandler open it and create new Alfa numeric value,
rename it (predetermined) open it and write;
{eec97550-47a9-11cf-b952-00aa0051fe20}

If you can't get your hands off the registry editor, you'd better download
the software you'll find in the following website... it's a free utility to
backup the whole registry.. just in case you really mess it up some time...

Allways back up the particular key you are going to modify to add it back in
if you have to.

Hope this helps.
