Hints on setting up a new WinXP Laptop?

Well, I need to replace my workhorse rock-solid stable Windows 2000 laptop with a
Windows XP Pro laptop. This is primarily because I am experiencing compatibility issues
with programs that need WinXP.

I was wondering: does anyone have any hints or tricks on CONFIGURING a new WinXP
computer? I mean, is there anything that you wish you had initially done when first
setting the laptop's configuration?

I'm doing a clean install of Windows XP Pro, 250G drive formatted in the laptop. I'll be
using Office XP, Diskeeper defragging in the background.

I'm partitioning the harddrive as C: for Windows & programs, D: for data.

Two Administrative accounts (for maintenance only), and my daily user account will be a
Power user account.

Any little hints or tricks to improve stability? I'm primarily interested in stability,
and next anything that will improve performance.

you seem to be on the
right track.

unless, you have a
partitioning program that
makes managing partitions
a breeze,

I would make 3 partitions.

the third one will be a
spare and "you will" likely
find a use for it sometime
in the future.

I'd lose the Diskeeper defragging in the background. Waste of time, CPU
cycles and battery life.

STRONGLY disagree. Diskeeper is the absolute best performance enhancement software you
can install. Solid speed improvements, even for older machines.

And it looks like you have no experience with Diskeeper do you? Diskeeper doesn't run
when on battery power, and it cycle-steals when defragging.

Sorry, have a copy, needed it for Windows 2000 box. I run it every 6
months, marginal improvement, but better than waiting a year. Ergo,
running constantly in the background, is a waste.
