Hijack attempt?

I

Ingo Monk

Hi,

Recently I noticed that I was not able to access my task
manager. I got the error message saying something about
access was restricted by the administrator. I thought this
was odd since I was using my administrator account. At the
same time the red Shut Down button is missing from the
start menu, so now I had to log off and then shut down from
the log on screen.

Anyway, I ran a virus scan and found a keylogger virus. I
deleted it and changed all my passwords. I ran Ad-Aware
and it found a registry setting that was disabling the task
manager. Now I can access it again, but I still don't have
the shut down button.

So my question is: How can I get this button back? Is
there a way I can check to see if my system is still
comprimised? I have McAfee Firewall and I'm behind a
router so I didn't think I could get hacked into, but
anything's possible?

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Give this a try:

Go to Start>Run and key in gpedit.msc then click on OK
or hit ENTER. In the
Group Policy window, under User Configuration in left-
hand pane,
double-click on Administrative Templates if not already
expanded to show the
items beneath. Now click on Start Menu and Taskbar, and
in the right-hand
pane scroll to locate "Remove and disable the Turn Off
Computer" button",
right-click on this item and select Properties. Under the
Setting tab, click
in the radio button beside either "Not Configured"
or "Disabled" and click
on Apply then OK. Close the Group Policy window. If the
Turn Off Computer
button is not now automatically displayed in the Start
Menu and you are
using the WINXP Start Menu option, right-click in the
blue title bar where
it displays the Username, select Properties then just
click on OK.....see if
the Turn Off Computer button is now displayed.
