High Speed USB does not work anymore

Hi,
I am using an IBM T41 with Windows XP with SP1 & 2. I used to regularly use
external HDs (e.g. Maxtor 300GB) with a USB 2.0 interface at high speed.

Recently, I am getting an error message ("This device can perform
faster...") indicating that the device is not plugged into a high speed port.
No other USB devices are plugged and the error occurs with both external HDs
that I have. The HDs have external power. I have tried uninstalling the USB
controller and reinstalling it, but the error still occurs.

I am not sure what has changed, that the USB ports have suddenly decided not
to work at high speed anymore. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Is the EHCI (USB 2.0) controller visible, if not reinstall its driver.
Also check if you're using an alternate USB port, some may not all be USB
2.0 version. If you added any USB devices, try disconnecting them and
trying the external hard drive usage.

Hi Dave,
thanks for the suggestions.
Have tried to re-install the driver several times, but no luck.
Here is what I can see in the device manager:

Universal serial bus controllers
- Intel(R)82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
- Intel(R)82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2
- Intel(R)82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4
- Intel(R)82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7

There are no other USB devices connected that could cause conflicts, and I
have tried to use either of my 2 USB ports.

This problem has had me stumped for a week now and I still can't figure it
out.
Thanks a lot for any pointers.

Apologies. I failed to mentioned that I had already updated my drivers with
the latest chipset drivers from INTEL a few days ago.

I am far from an expert in this, but the most likely explanations are:

1) An automatic update has occured for one of the drivers on my PC which now
causes a conflict with the USB ports
2) A physical hardware defect has occured that is now preventing operation
in high speed mode. However, this seems less likely, as a HW defect would
most likely also prevent the USB ports from working completely. (My ports
still work, but in 1mbit/s or 12mbit/s mode.)

Any further hints greatly appreciated.

I am having a similar problem. I Just purchased a HD to use in an external
enclosure (also a maxtor) that uses usb 2. ANd i also get that message (yadda
yadda yadda highspeed will be better). However, all the quote "available
ports" actually do have devices plugged into them. In my device manager
however, it lists those ports as empty, while my devices have created their
own ports or something(or thats how it appears in my device manager). I
updated my USB drivers, however the update dosent show in the properties of
the ports or controller either. Im stumped.

If you have removed a USB device for a long time and then plug it back in,
you sometimes get that message. For me it went away after a reboot or two.
Windows will "see" that the device is a USB2 device and will "assign" it to
the USB2 controller rather than the USB1.x controller.

Does anyone know of an easy to use benchmark tool to test the transfer speed?
I tried one, but i think it was a bit dated.

i'm using an IBM t41p too and i have the same problem. it used to support
usb2.0 devices but god knows why after a while of not using them, i get the
same error u get u get.

i tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and it does not work.
once i tried formatting my com and it worked after which i had to reformat
shortly again becos of partitioning errors and hal.dll error.

this time i cant seem to get my usb to work to optimal 2.0 speeds. i will
try calling ibm technical support for answers.

hopefully i can update.

ps. my usb2.0 devices r the dvd-rw writers, hdd external, sony memory pro duo.

The most basic question is in Device Manager/Universal Bus Controllers do
you see an entry "USB2 Enhanced Host Controller"? If you don't you simply
do not have the USB 2 driver loaded. If you do then delete it, shut down,
plug in one of your USB2 devices and reboot. WINXP should then detect your
device and reload the USB2 driver. Further, I am assuming your USB2 devices
do not need proprietary drivers, as some do. If they do require proprietary
drivers, then you should investigate whether they are corrupt and require
reinstalling.

Your post indicates you are semi illiterate so you may not understand the
foregoimg. Get your Mummy to explain :).

Dear mr simpson,

u too seem illiterate or maybe even blind. have u not seen the part of my
original msg where it says "i tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers
and it does not work."

anyway i might be making myself clear but what i meant for the last part of
my original msg
"> this time i cant seem to get my usb to work to optimal 2.0 speeds. i will
try calling ibm technical support for answers. "
was that i can see "USB2 Enhanced Host Controller" under device manager but
like the thread starter, I am getting an error message ("This device can
perform
faster...") indicating that the device is not plugged into a high speed port
when i plugged a usb2.0 device into my usb port.

the problem is solved anyway. what i did was i updated my bios thru the ibm
thinkvantage software updater program.

i transfered 4gigs worth of data under 15 mins now. i hope this helps other
people who are facing the same problem.
