HIDDEN PASSWORDS

Can anyone help?

I recently purchased a laptop through the company I work for and it came
preloaded with W2k Pro. and ever since it has been impossible to save my
dialup or ADSL passwords. If I try, all that happens is that I get a
password entry that is at least 10 characters long and clearly not mine. I
have tried cancelliung out passwords through both the computer management
module and also directly in the users section. None of this appears to solve
the problem. Curiously, it does not affect the Windows Login screen. Is
this something to do with the registry or is there some hidden utility that
will clear all passwords. My login incidentally has full and unrestricted
access.

You write "I get a password entry that is at least 10 characters
long and clearly not mine." Your assumption is incorrect. The
number of asterisks you see on your screen is not related to the
length of your own password - it's always 10 characters! This
is a standard measure aimed at concealing the length of the
password.

I've checked the number of asterisks and it is actually 16 characters long.
Not only that but whatever is in there is not my password as my connection to
either dialup or adsl service is refused.

I have tried deleting the Protected Storage System Provider registry key as
per the Microsoft help file "Your Outlook Express Password is Not Retained in
Windows 200 or XP". I know I am not dealing with Express but I figured that
it may be related in some way - this didn't work!

I'm sure that is related to the W2K user accounts - there is the Guest
account but I have suspended that account.

This is really driving me mad! Although not a major problem because I
switch off the password remembering function or just overtype the incorrect
password. However, now that I have an adsl account, I would like to be able
to fire up the computer, automatically connect and download email without any
user intervention. Until I resolve this problem, it will not be possible.

Please help

Thank you
