Hibernation / Suspend Lockup

A

Andy Neillans

Win XP Pro SP1 and all current patches from Windows Update.

The machine starts and shutsdown happily, but if I use either Hibernation or
Suspend, it does not wake up correctly.
The machine switches on ok, but I just get the blue background and the
cursor - I used to get a screen saying something along the lines of 'this
machine is locked by user Laptop\Andy etc etc'.

I have checked the Event Log and there are no errors showing (apart from a
few mysterious ones about PerfLib and PerfNet that I have been unable to
trace over the last few months).

Any ideas?

If anyone needs more information, please ask!

I'm a little confused here. Suspend and hibernation have nothing to do with
locking the workstation. Neither does that. Hibernation saves all the info
in memory to a file so that you can start up xp and programs faster. Suspend
usually powers down the hardware, drives, monitor to conserve energy.
To lock the machine:
1 - create a shortcut to lock machine
2 - hit windows key + L
3 - have your screen saver password protected

Sounds to me like you had the password on screen saver set, and coming out
of suspend is the same as coming out of a screen saver thus the locked
workstation message and password required to get back in.
To set the password on screen saver:
right click desktop, properties, screen saver tab, check the box: on resume
password protect or on resume display welcome screen.

However, there's a setting in power options which will cause the
computer to be locked when it exits standby. I believe this applies to
hibernation as well.

Spot on - just realised that I have that enabled too (the laptop is used
on-site, and as such would be very bad if a customer gained access to some
of the information on it!).

Yup, you're right. My bad, forgot about that.
