Hi all, it about 3 day that i hear a strange noise that come from my
pc, i suspect my harddride that goes to hell... It cant be a fan
because the noise is tooo loud. it a kind of a hiss with high peak
sound. it's a maxtor diamond max plus 9 80gig 8mb cache. It is a home
pc but often it been use for a server use with alot of I/O. Is this a
sing that it will crash in a few days. or could it be the screw that
fix the drive that are comming loose and manage to do that sound?

Get a small piece of flexible tubing, approximately 12" long and
probably about 1/2" in diameter. With the pc running and the side
panel off, hold one end of the tube to your ear and the other end you
can place "CAREFULLY" next to all powered components, one at a time.
You could actually touch it onto the hardrive or other hard surfaces,
just don't touch anything with your body.

This will help you isolate your noise problem. But it very well could
be the hdd and you should back up your files at once.

If you are seeking to isolate the source of noise, such as bearing
noise, the old mechanics trick is to put the handle of a screwdriver
to your ear, and touch the blade of the screwdriver to the suspected
sources of the noise. Be careful to avoid contact with electronics
inside the case, just touch the screwdriver to the metal case of the
HD or the fan shrouds and listen for the noise. Or course, an
experienced mechanic has a stethoscope (sp?) with a rod attached
thereto for listening to such noises.

It think it's my hdd cause the last time i've chech i was turning off
the pc and the cpu fan turn off faster than the disk and the
videocard too. So the hdd make a little more time to spind of because
of the wate of the platter. And has it was slowing donw it was
decreasing in the amount of noise.

Lol i shall try that the stethoscope trick and get electric shoc
strait to the brain... Any way i'm a technician in the building field
and electronics is apart of my studing. So i should be ok....
