$hf_mig$

I've just discovered about 20 files in my WINDOWS file with name similar to
$NtUninstallKB901190$ and the $hf_mig$ file consuming 230 mb. I think they
were installed during a microsoft security update as temporary files. Yes? Do
I still need them or can I delete them?

If you don't want to ever uninstall, they are worthless. So yes!

The $NTUninstall* directories are the installation files from WindowsUpdate. If you don't plan on uninstalling
these you can safely delete them. It is NOT recommended that you mess with the $hf_mig$ directory as it's
used to insure that any updates don't overrite updated DLL's that have been applied via WindowsUpdate.

The $NtUninstallKBxxxxxx$ folders were created when that particular update
referenced by the KBxxxxxx article was installed and are needed if you want
to remove that update. If things are working well, and you won't be
removing them, you can delete those folders (or to be safe move them to a
CD). After that you can remove the reference to each update from add/remove
programs. MVP Doug Knox has a utility on his site to automate the removal
of these uninstall folders and the entry for each update in Add/Remove
programs

Remove Hotfix Backup Files v2.1.6 - Updated 5/29/2004

Do _not_ remove the $hf_mig$ folder. It's needed for future updates.
