Can someone please help me. My father's PC won't start Windows. All he gets
is a message which says "file missing or corrupt"
"windows/system32/config/system" "You can attempt repair by starting windows
setup using original setup CDrom.select r at first screen" unfortunately he
does not have original CD. Is there any other way of repairing windows. He
said this happened after he had to switch off PC when it froze on him.

You must get the cd to repair or reinstall since his windows system files are
corrupt. Call the computer maker to get one. If you have a recovery
partition, you can use the manufacturers instructions (Dell's is: Control+F11
at first startup) to revert to "as shipped" condition. Contact your
computer's support site for help.

There's another option before you try and repair/reinstall. I've seen
this happen a number of times on a lot of computers - you can manually
pull the system file (it's the registry hive) from the most recent
restore point. How PC Literate are you? It's a pretty complicated
procedure if you don't have a lot of experience, you may want to ask a
friend to do it.
