Help with XP start up

Hey guys; need some help here. My laptop gateway has xp installed
haven't had no problems till now. When I start the pc up it goes fine
"Windows XP Logo" shows and soon after that, when it starts to
transission to my desktop, it automatically restarts! I've tried
logging in safemode, and get the same effect. I can get into the
command prompt, but can't figure out what's making windows act up. I'm
recieving no error msgs; anything. I'm thinking a bad device driver or
..sys file corrupt. Anyway thanks ahead of time guys. Appriciate it.

I just started getting a similar problem today right after I restarted
my WinXP pro with today's windows update. My laptop just hangs dead
before the login screen in 100% of cases, although I could move the
mouse cursor so it's not dead completely. Exactly the same thing
happens in a Safe Mode. Currently I'm checking my disk from the
Recovery console, and no disc failures so far. Got no idea on what's
going on, and now I'm blaming the recent windows update I just
installed (Kernel Echo Canceller .sys or something like that).
Alternatively I got some sort of a virus, well it's 20 years since the
big bada Chernobyl boom today, maybe I got some sort of a ticking
timebomb although I checked my PC for viruses 2 days ago.
