Help with Windows Help

I have Windows 2000 Pro. When I use the help from the
help menu and go to the index tab all is okay. I then
choose any item and click display the display is shown in
the right pane. But when I click on one of the underlined
linked items in this pane including the Related Topics
link I get an error. This is the error that pops up:

This one is for the Related Topics Link:
Internet Explorer Script Error
An error has occured in the scrip on this page.
Line: 519
Char: 9
Error: Object doesn't support this property or method.
Code: 0
URL:
mk:mad:MSITStore:C:\WINNT\Help\ntshrui.chm::/ntshrui_security.
htm

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page? Yes
or No.

I reloaded Windows 2000 Pro. NOT a clean install. Any
ideas. I recently installed Spybot and utilized the
Immunize option.

Thanks In advance

Try this:

Unregister hhctrl.ocx and then register hhctrl.ocx.
regsvr32 /u %SystemRoot%\system32\hhctrl.ocx
regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\hhctrl.ocx

Alternatively: Right-click & install C:\WINNT\inf\tshoot.inf

Internet Explorer Script Error
An error has occured in the scrip on this page.

This problem is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 822989
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822989). Unless you've installed
Service Pack 4 for Windows 2000, the solution should be to apply
Critical Update 811630, which is available from here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811630

If you have installed Service Pack 4, the fix is to open a Command
Prompt window and then run these two commands:

regsvr32 /u <drive>:\winnt\system32\hhctrl.ocx
regsvr32 <drive>:\winnt\system32\hhctrl.ocx

The first command unregisters the HTML Help ActiveX control, which is
what provides the navigation features in the help files; the second
command re-registers the control. This should fix the broken registry
entries that are responsible for the problem.

I havn't done any of the fixes yet but I have a couple of
questions. 1. How is SP4 - SP3 seems to work well without
any real problems - does SP4. Do you still need the
Blaster Patch with SP4 and were there anyadditional
patches needed for SP4. 2. Why/How did this help problem
occur? I remember using the Help menu when I originally
installed Windows 2000 and it worked?

Thanks again.

MG,

In answer to question #2 (I can't answer question #1 except to say
that SP4 seems to be working fine on my PC):
2. Why/How did this help problem occur? I remember using the
Help menu when I originally installed Windows 2000 and it worked?

A number of the cumulative security patches for Internet Explorer that
Microsoft released last year are known to break the registry entries
for the HTML Help ActiveX control (hhctrl.ocx). This is the control
that provides much of the underlying functionality in the help files,
so the registry problems consequently lead to broken hyperlinks
throughout the help system.

As you've yet to install SP4 then applying Critical Update 811630
should provide the solution. If you do install SP4 and find that the
help files are still broken then unregistering/re-registering the
control ought to correct this.
