Help with importing registry

N

Hi,

I made some changes to the registry following advice from
powerquest regarding drive image 7.
I made a backup of the registry before I began using the
export facility.
I now need to revert my registry back to it's original
state, using the regedit import facility reports an error
stating "Cannot import path/filename.reg: Not all data
was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are
open by the system or other processes".
I have tried the reg import command from the DOS prompt
but this reports a 'access denied'.
I am using administrator account. I have stooped many
services services which are not crtitical system services
and checked for rogue processes in the task manager, but
still no joy!

Any idea's/advice greatly appreciated.

thanks

Naz

Try the system restore.

This applies to the import function.

"The "Export registry" function in Regedit is USELESS (!)
to make a complete backup of the registry. Neither does it
export the whole registry (for example, no information
from the "SECURITY" hive is saved), nor can the exported
file be used later to replace the current
registry with the old one. Instead, if you re-import the
file, it is merged with the current registry, leaving you
with an absolute mess of old and new registry keys."

thanks for the posts, unfortunately I switched off System
Restore to make my system image smaller to use with Drive
Image!
I think a complete a re-build is on the cards...

Thanks

You may have to do the Registry import in "Safe Mode" or Recovery/Repair
Console. When Windows is runnign in normal mode, several registry keys are
being used. Safe Mode/Reecovery(Repair) Console should have the keys no
being used.
