Help with curly brackets

Am placing a "nested if" in word mailmerge doc. I can insert the bracket with
Ctrl+F9. Problem is I end up with too many or not enought brackets to
complete statement. When I try to delete bracket, have to deltete the pair
and all statements between. Bet there is something real simple I am missing,
but I can't find it.
