HELP! WinXP won't boot from CD or HDD

I made the big mistake. I opened an unexpected e-mail with pics from a
friend. Long time no hear from friend, sending new pics of family--LOL.
A blue screen flashed by and my machine rebooted :( A message came up
saying a error occurred and I should boot to my operating system CD and do a
repair (r).
When I try to boot to my "operating system CD" from HP I get the following
message:

"Line 18374 of the INF file \i386\txtsetup.sif is invalid"
Setup cannot continue
Press any key to exit

If it tries to boot from the HDD I get this message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file"

How do I fix this if I can't boot to my CD with my operating system on it??
HP pavillion AMD Athlon64 WinXP SP2 512ram

Update: forgot to mention I've tried other XP op system CDs, even a retail
upgrade disc.
