HELP!!! VPN OUTBOUND PROBLEM

G

Guest

Hi,

I've searched everywhere for a resolution to this and am amazed that no-else
has had this problem. I've installed a microsoft VPN to enable me to connect
to work. The connection has installed properly as it says I am successfully
connected to my work network and when hovering over the network icon in the
system tray it says access:local only which I understand is correct.

BUT - I cannot ping the work server and obviosuly desktop connection doesnt
work either becuase of that. I have disabled the firewall and still no luck.

Obviously my tech support cant help as they dont support vista but they tell
me that the vpn software is a standard microsoft solution just with their
front end. I use a 3com router.

They have also been able to connect remotely to my PC and therefore inbound
traffic is OK. Form this they deduce that there is some software
configuration that is blocking OUTBOUND traffic. I have stumbled accross
advanced firewall settings but dont want to touch that without help.

Is there something simple in vista i need to enable/disable to allow the
connection through?

Please please help. I cant work from home :(

OK - when I am connected to work through my VPN, the lights on my modem are
as follows...

Power - on (obvoiusly)
Online - on
Sync - on
Wlan - quick flashing

Not sure what this tells us!

Quick flashing probably means you don't have a connection to your
provider. Before you start up your VPN connection, is the WLAN LED on
solid? I'm assuming you have no trouble cruising the Internet when
you VPN connection is off?

You can get a separate set of network lights in your system tray for
your VPN connection. To enable that, open up the properties for your
VPN connection and click the checkbox for "Show icon in notification
area when connected."

Did you successfully VPN into your employer before installing Vista?
That is, did it work on XP? Some ISPs block VPN traffic. Comcast
used to; I thankfully dumped them ages ago, so I don't know what their
current stand is on VPN.
