Hi, IQON.
I had that "The directory name is invalid" error message back in January,
and I dug myself pretty into a pretty deep hole before I found the answer -
which was really pretty easy AFTER I found it.
UAC is "User Access Control". This is a big part of Vista's new security
features. It keeps unauthorized users (whether at the keyboard or over the
Internet or other network) from installing a rogue program on our computers.
It requires that we use our Administrator credentials to install a program.
For some programs, we must not only be "an administrator", but be running as
the "Administrator", an even higher level of authority.
To install your program, RIGHT-click on the installation file (setup.exe or
install.exe, usually), then click Run as Administrator.
Yes, you CAN turn off UAC, but then you are back to about the same level of
vulnerability as WinXP. It's best to leave UAC on. After the first few
days of using Vista, during which you have to install several drivers and
applications, you will not see the UAC messages nearly as often. I've been
using Vista for several months and now UAC pops up only when I need to do
some Administrator-level job, such as Disk Management or Advanced Indexing
Options.
