Help Saving Pictures Embedded in E-Mails

J

JD

When I get photos in e-mail (from AOL), I right click and choose Save
Picture As, then choose .jpg; however, what appears in my folder are generic
icons which Windows does not recognize. Can someone advise me as to how to
save such pictures. I have no problems when they are "attachments." I just
drag them and drop them into appropriate folders. But sometimes they are
just embedded in the e-mail.

Maybe the person sending the files *from* an
AOL account needs to adjust some settings.

Here's a trick you can try on the files you are
having a problem with:

===

How to convert .art files using Internet Explorer:

Open Internet Explorer...

Open the folder with your .Art files...

Drag and Drop an .Art file into the open
Internet Explorer window...(it doesn't
matter what's already in the window).

Right click the .Art file...hopefully you will
have the "Save Picture As" option...

Or...simply go to...File / Save As...

Thanks for your suggestions. These are not AOL "art" files, just standard
pictures. I guess that the sender (from AOL) is the problem. The pictures
may be "compressed" by AOL, but they still display perfectly in Outlook
Express.
However, in Outlook Express, the Save As option renders unreadable files. I
wonder if the OE security settings might have something to do with this?
As an experiment, I forwarded the e-mail to myself and then intercepted it
on the Comcast mail site. The pictures were still embedded, but here I had
the option to Save As bitmap files. After saving in this format I opened the
files in Paint and "saved as" .jpgs.

Sorry...that's all I have on the subject. I think you
may be receiving AOL .art files that have a .jpg
extension.

Did you try converting the files with the IE trick?

As to the "IE trick," these are not .art files. They are pictures embedded
in e-mail messages. They cannot be dragged and dropped. Right clicking only
offers the option "Save Picture As." When I do that, and choose "JPEG," what
is created is a generic file that Windows cannot open.

And what I am trying to do with very little cooperation
from you is to have you drop one of the saved files
that Windows cannot open into an IE window. Have
you tried it?

OK. Mea culpa.
I did as you suggested and the picture did open in the IE window. However,
it is the same as having it inside an e-mail. That is, I can view it just
fine, but cannot save it to the hard drive as a jpeg, which can then be sent
to someone else.
I tried the Save As from within IE and the same thing happened as when it
was done from within OE. A file was created on the hard drive, but was
unreadable by Windows. Here, by the way, is the file extension (I think) as
indicated by its Properties: !cid_X.MA1.1093185626@aol[1]
Thanks again for your continued dialog with me regarding this matter.

Communicating with you is very difficult
but I'll give it one more shot:

When you had the file open in the IE window...
did you go to...File / Save As? If not....try it
one more time and let me know what your
*Save As* options are.

File | Save As from within IE gives the options "Web Page, Web Archive, and
Text File."
What I want to do is Save As jpeg on the hard drive.

I have no idea what that is.

This is such a frustrating issue, I think
I'm going nuts. In the previous message
....I gave you an incorrect address.

Try the following address:

Absolutely Amazing!
I can't thank you enough. Nor can I imagine how you figured this out.
No doubt others have had this problem and will also benefit from our, at
times frustrating, exchange.
Thanks again.
