HELP - Reinstall errors XP Professional

HI:

My XP Professional w/svc pk 2 started doing a continous loop reboot. I tried
to do a Reinstall - following the directions from one of the threads w/ this
link
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.htm

After I select R for reinstall, the status bar indicates copying files etc -
then I get the following error:

"A problem has been detected and windows must shut down to prevent damage to
computer.
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
Disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing
technical info - stop: 0x0000004E (0x00000099, 0x00009c64, 0x0000000,
0x0000000)"

I then pulled out my hard drive (still want to recover data) and installed a
new hard drive - I tried to do a Clean Install - and I get the same error!

How do I disable bios memory options? Will that solve it and allow me to
reinstall??

Thanks.

0x0000004E: PFN_LIST_CORRUPT

I would start by testing the memory. Download these three diagnostic tools.
Run at least two of them, letting it run for multiple passes, not just a
single run.

Memtest86+

Windows Memory Diagnostic

Hi Rock:

Thanks for sending me in the right direction. I ran both memtest86+ and the
Windows diagnostics. My machine failed on both. So, I will pull out my 2 GB
of mem and see if a friend can test it in their machine. If that is not it -
is it my motherboard?? I saw it could be the CPU also?? How do you pin point
it? Or, you just have to start replacing pieces and find out?

Thanks again.

Ok you're on the right track. Now test each memory stick separately.
